China Curbs Exports of Tunnel Boring Machines; India Pushes Local Manufacturing
China has announced export controls on tunnel boring machines, specialised excavators and dredging equipment, effective November 18, potentially affecting India’s metro, high-speed rail, tunnel and infrastructure projects. The restrictions require exporters to obtain licences, raising concerns over equipment availability and project delays. In response, the Indian government plans consultations with industry stakeholders and is advancing a scheme to boost domestic manufacturing. Around ₹45,000 crore worth of construction equipment and components face high import dependence, creating opportunities for Indian manufacturers.
