French Riots Could Cost Insurers Up to €1.2 Billion

Insurance companies could face up to €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in insured losses following violent riots across France over the weekend. Around 3,000 businesses were reportedly affected, including luxury retailers and shops targeted by looting and vandalism. The estimated losses exceed the €798 million recorded during France’s 2023 riots. Analysts warn that recurring unrest is increasingly resembling a catastrophe risk for insurers. France is planning a state-backed riot insurance system, expected to launch in 2027.
