Indian Retail Traders Shift to Commodity Options; MCX Emerges as Global Leader

Indian retail investors are increasingly shifting to commodity derivatives after suffering losses in equity options, joining high-speed trading firms in a rapidly growing market, Bloomberg reported. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) recorded ₹1,221 lakh crore in commodity options turnover in FY26, up 140% year-on-year. MCX has emerged as the world’s largest commodity options exchange by contracts traded. The trend reflects rising volatility, lower transaction taxes and longer trading hours, although derivatives remain risky for retail traders.
