Bangladesh Garment Protests Shut 529 Factories; Indian Textile Exporters Could Gain

Bangladesh’s garment sector faced major disruption after wage protests forced 529 factories to shut, leaving nearly one million workers without work. Workers are demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka, up from 12,500 taka, citing rising food, housing, transport and healthcare costs. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators blocking roads in Dhaka and Gazipur, with clashes and arson reported. The disruption could redirect international apparel orders towards Indian manufacturers.
